Premise Statement

In post-WW II America, dramatic changes were under way. On the domestic front, the rising middle class with disposable income, an emerging teen culture with rock and roll as its background score, social movements from African Americans, women, Hispanics and other changed the dynamics of the culture. On the foreign policy front, America was evolving as a dominant world power.

Use your assigned readings and other credible sources to affirm or contradict one of the following comments as it relates to the Premise Statement above:

a. Economist John Kenneth Galbraith called the post-World War II era The Affluent Society where middle class America emerged supported by its thriving economy. This new economy led to mass consumerism for adults and, for the first time in history, a large teen culture with unprecedented disposable income. The teen culture fueled a political, economic and cultural revolution for civil rights, women’s rights and equal opportunity, all to the background score of rock and roll music. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain

b. Prior to World War II, Britain and France were the “Great Powers”, meaning they were the dominant powers in the world. World War II realigned the “players on the chessboard” with the United States taking the lead as the dominant world power challenged by an aggressive Soviet Union during the Cold War (1945-1991). The US policy of Containment (using diplomacy and military force to contain Communist expansion) was successfully accomplished through military actions in Korea and Vietnam and other US initiatives that included the Marshall Plan, Détente and the Israeli-Egyptian Peace Accord in 1979. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Explain.

c. Technology chases technology and at moved at a rapid pace after World War II. Television, Space Exploration from Sputnik to Apollo 11, medical advances and the internet dramatically changed American culture for the positive. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Were there an short comings as a result of these advances? Explain.
