I’m working on a Social Science question and need guidance to help me study.

In this unit, we will look at being a parent, parenting, children and childrearing. The cost of parenting and various parenting styles will be examined. This unit will also examine the ecological framework and its application to family.

Topic 1: “Mothering from a distance: emotions, gender and intergenerational relations in Filipino transnational families”

What are your thoughts on transnational families and mothering from a distance? Would you do this for your family if in their position? How do the Filipino domestic workers deal with the pain/guilt?

Topic 2: “The father as an idea”

How do mothers who use a sperm donor construct the idea of the father for their children? Why is this important? What if anything would you do differently and why?

Topic 3: “Out of sorts: Adoption and (Un)Desirable Children”

What are your thoughts on the reading? Why are white babies in more demand than babies of color? Should there be a law that makes the prices of adoption in the US the same no matter the race/ethnicity of the child? Why or why not?

Topic 4: “Consumption as Care and Belonging: Economies of Dignity in Children’s Daily Lives”

Do you agree with the author’s conclusions? Why or why not?
