• This chapter introduces you to an important concept; the social construction of gender. Gender construction means that we learn our gender from those people in our society. Different societies have different cultural expectations. For example, a part of the female traditional gender role for women is cooking and childcare. However, how many of you know men who are better cooks than women? Aren’t men just as capable of being a good parent?
• Discuss and give at least three examples of how gender is a social construction. You will look for other cultures who ‘do gender’ differently than we do here in the States. Cite your example with a source from the internet.
