1. What is the importance or significant of intergenerational trauma that Mailhot writes about? Discuss the horror that was her early years—a childhood marked with addiction, poverty, and abuse.

The significance of trauma that Mailhot experienced is extremely significant. It is her way of identify why she is the way she is. It is helping her understand and beat her inner demons. It is a way of also helping her understand the relationships she has with men and with her kids. As everything she says or does is due to her abuse she has faced and all the negativity she has experienced growing up.

1. In the essay “Indian Sick,” what are the multiple diagnoses Mailhot receives in the hospital? What is the significance of these diagnoses?

The multiple diagnoses she is diagnosed with are: Post- traumatic Stress Disorder, an eating disorder, and bipolar 2. This are result of her life experiences with all the hardship she has endured.

1. Mailhot uses time as a strategy in her writing. What is her purpose in shifting time so fluidly and jumping back and forth in time in her narrative?

This is something interesting to me and something I may not know exactly yet. Which is why I am choosing to answer it. I think once I read further into her writings it will be much clearer. I personally have to interpret it as how her own through process works. I think her having a mental illness creates a way of abrupt thinking and choppiness in her thought process. There for, her personal diary entries are choppy and abrupt.

1. I think Marji rarely talks about her friends because she sometimes was feeling jealous from them. For example when one of her friend’s father past away she didn’t fell sorry for her instead she told her friend that she should be happy because her dad was a hero and a martyr.

2. The roles in Iran are, women were forced to dress in a certain way and cover their hair with veils when out in public, and boys and girls can no longer attend school together. Marji didn’t follow the roles but instead she took part in protest and her mother attended in all most all the of the protest. Marji’s grandmother supported her to become part of the resistance.

6. I think Marji chose to tell her story in words and image because she is a graphic artist. Another thing is that is easier to transfer a complex idea through an image rather than just words. Also images are more effective than words and it helps the readers understand the author’s feeling and thoughts.
