Given:

In the beginning of the 20th century, Native Americans were faced with having little or no resources to adequately sustain their populations. They had limited land, a scattered population, and language and cultural barriers dividing them from the rest of the U.S. population. Many Native American nations have struggled with poor access to healthcare, difficulty sustaining a viable existence on their lands, increased crime and drug abuse, poor educational opportunities, and severe poverty. These issues continue to plague many Native American populations into the 21st century.

Native American organizations and nations have worked to alleviate some of these problems. For example, the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) was founded in 1944 in response to governmental termination and assimilation policies that threatened the existence of the Native American culture. This organization now includes over 250 member tribes and works to educate the public about Native Americans, works with the government to maintain their rights, and works toward improving the lives of Native Americans throughout the United States (National Congress of American Indians, 2006). More recently, the United States government has also worked toward changing policies to aid instead of hinder Native American nations.

a. Analyze how effective the Native American nation has been in dealing with this issue.

5. Describe how the United States government has responded to this issue (consider if the issue can be resolved by the government [e.g., through legislation, financial support, etc.] and what efforts the government has made to resolve this issue).
