The assigned reading, Eve Bunting’s allegory, “Terrible Things,” specifically focuses on the social injustices and atrocities which occurred during World War II and the Holocaust. An allegory is an extended metaphor where objects or characters stand for something else. Allegories usually have a larger message or moral. In the recent past, the United States has faced and is facing significant social challenges such as extreme political divisiveness, immigration, COVID-19, and racial inequity, just to name a few. Your assignment is to compose an essay at least 3 full pages, recommend at least 31/2 pages following proper MLA style, which uses “Terrible Things” to address the message and themes in the story as it applies to the current racial inequities in today’s America. You will want to briefly summarize the plot and explain the significant messages and themes in the story. Then, using the story as your foundation, discuss how it can be interpreted in relationship to the current protests and claims of police brutality and inequality in the treatment of minorities in the United States. You do NOT have to limit the definition of minorities to just Black Americans. It may include ALL minorities in addition to Black Americans who are not equally treated such as women, Latinos, Mexicans, Muslims, and the LBGH community. Can you draw conclusions from the story that would fit with today’s situation? Are there details in the story that you can reference, or that may seem to have certain parallels with today’s social unrest? What do you believe would be the message from Eve Bunting about today’s social and racial divisiveness? What do you think she would encourage us to do about it? Would she be supportive of the demonstrators and protesters? What do you think she would recommend that needs to be done? Do you think we, as human beings, have learned from our mistakes in the past? Why or why not? I am looking for evidence of a thorough comprehension and response to the short story, and a thoughtful and serious reflection about the issue and protests that are occurring today about societal and racial injustice. Your thesis statement should utilize the Although Thesis Formula stating your position with at least 3 supporting reasons for your claim. The last paragraph before the conclusion should briefly present the opposing viewpoint and then explain why your position is the more correct. Your Works Cited page must include a citation for the short story, and a minimum of 2 other entries following correct MLA format. You must use quotes from the story and include it on the wc page, but you MUST also have at least 2 other research sources. These sources should be college level, academic sources and one may be a biograph on Eve Bunting. A complete rough draft should be submitted to the MWL Tutor Service as required.
