Title with Specific Reference to the Italicized Play
If you are writing about Fences, you probably want to start with elements of the play that show it concerns a modern tragic hero. In short, that means that Troy would like to think of himself in one way but is unable to make that way of thinking a reality. This gap between desire and reality destroys him. So you could summarize Troy’s image of himself as a baseball player and then the actuality of Troy’s experience in baseball: he looks back on it as nothing but an injustice done to him. Or you could summarize the positive elements of Troy as a provider for his family, as a husband and father, and then the actuality: he is distant from his sons and ends up ruining his marriage. You want to get to the point that Troy is being destroyed by bitterness (caused primarily by his baseball experience, but also because of his childhood). It is possible that Arthur Miller’s concept of the “wound of indignity” (caused by Major League Baseball’s color line) could be cited in the introduction. That wound is what makes Troy bitter. The question is basically this: how does this bitterness cause Troy’s fall? You can sum up the answer in a sentence or two here in the introduction or in a conclusion.
If you are writing about A Doll’s House, the root of the problem between Torvald and Nora, the root of the problem that destroys their marriage, is probably the extreme inequality that separates them. You might want to cite Emma Goldman’s view that the play presents “the position of woman in her gilded cage” (1). You probably want to refer to examples of inequality to get started. It would be easy to refer to the pet names used by Torvald in the first act or to the centrality of money, for which Nora depends completely on Torvald, who views her (unjustly) as a spendthrift. The question you want to lead up to is how this inequality leads to the end of their marriage. The answer probably has to do with the false gender roles that they play and the dishonesty that they create. Neither Torvald nor Nora is able to live these roles in reality, at least happily or healthily. Again, state here or in conclusion.
Then your body paragraphs begin to explain how bitterness causes Troy’s fall or how inequality leads to the end of the Helmers’ marriage. The key is to explain yourself in a step-by-step fashion. Do not get ahead of yourself. Do one topic at a time. Start paragraphs with sentences on the following topics. Topic sentences should serve to explain Troy’s fall or the end of Torvald and Nora’s marriage.
| The effect of Troy’s father on Troy as a person:
Nora’s financial inequality (and, ironically, her money management skills):
| The effect of Troy’s father on Troy as a father to Lyons and Cory (and those could be separate paragraphs):
The dishonesty caused by financial inequality and gender roles:
| The effect of Troy’s inability to play in the
major leagues:
New feelings stirred by Nora’s secret work: |
| The effect of poverty and reliance on Gabe:
Torvald’s moral superiority:
| Troy’s keen sense of justice and injustice: | Lack of communication between Torvald and Nora:
| Troy’s perspective on his marriage:
Sexual and domestic inequality:
| Troy’s affair with Alberta:
The contrast of Krogstad and Linden:
| Troy’s perspective on life: | Torvald’s and Nora’s gender roles:
| The cross-generational conclusion: | Nora’s need to become educated:
As usual, try to integrate quotes correctly. Here are some examples. It is interesting that in both plays money plays a central role. Referring to the injury that resulted in Gabe receiving three thousand dollars for his service in World War II, Troy complains bitterly about his own inability to pay for a house: “That’s the only way I got a roof over my head . . . cause of that metal plate” (Wilson 28). In A Doll’s House Torvald takes his wife (wrongly) to be a spendthrift and attributes that quality to her father: “It’s in the blood. Yes, Nora, that sort of thing is hereditary” (Ibsen 3). That’s the colon followed by the start of a sentence with a capital letter.
Troy is a hard worker and takes pride in his own work ethic, but he also resents his working-class existence. Troy disapproves of Lyons’ work in music, saying, “You still trying to get something for nothing” (Wilson 18). Linden in A Doll’s House presents a contrast to Nora’s naiveté; she has worked to support herself on her own. She assumes Nora has never worked for money, observing, “You’re a child, Nora” (Ibsen 7). That’s the speech act verb plus comma integration.
In A Doll’s House, Nora must keep her copying work for money a secret, work that made her feel like “a man” (Ibsen 9). Troy in Fences is proud of his hard work and resentful that Lyons—in his view—is “too lazy to work” (Wilson 17). That’s maybe the best way to quote: integration without punctuation.
The rough draft should probably have two entries in the works cited list: the play and, I strongly suggest, the secondary source that I suggested for each play: the essay by Arthur Miller for Fences, which you can use to help define Troy as a modern tragic hero, and the essay by Emma Goldman for A Doll’s House, which presents a reading of the play as one about women’s rights—which I think is correct. If you want, you can do one of the exercises on finding four more secondary sources and integrate another secondary source or two, but that’s not required. You can leave the integration of the other four secondary sources until after you write the rough.
