Step 2 – Transforming a Research Topic into a Research Paper
A broad research topic is not a research paper. Imagine writing a research paper on Israelite
culture, monotheism, or education. You need to do some investigation into the broad topic and
find your specific research focus. What is it about your broad topic that you want to explore?
Zero in on that focused area and identify the major interpretive issues, sources of evidence, and
scholarly controversies. For example, you may be interested in Israelite culture, and specifically
the issue of music. A more focused research question can be the question of what type of music
may have been produced by ancient Israelites. Or whether music played a role in Yahweh
worship. What sources would be involved in investigating this question further? What biblical
sources are relevant? And how do we use the biblical material critically? Are there
archaeological sources? Can evidence from other Near Eastern cultures help? What debates do
modern scholars have regarding this question?
Step 3 – Using your Powers of Critical Analysis for a Short Research Paper
Your final paper will bring all these issues together to provide a critical reading of the primary
sources and their modern scholarly analysis. You should try to make sense of the primary
evidence yourself. Use your powers of critical analysis that you have been building all semester.
At the same time, you should locate your analysis of the primary sources alongside modern
secondary sources. Your paper should not just summarize what modern scholars say. Use these
resources to advance your own analysis. Engage in dialogue with the secondary sources based on
your understanding of the primary evidence.

1. Primary and Secondary Source Requirements
Primary Sources: Your discussion should incorporate at least TWO primary sources.
o What is a Primary Source: A primary source is a document, speech, artifact, or other sort
of evidence written, created or otherwise produced during the time under study. Primary
sources offer an inside view of a particular event.
Secondary Sources: Your discussion should incorporate at least TWO secondary sources (i.e.,
modern scholarly discussion of the issue).
o What is a Secondary Source: Secondary sources provide interpretation and analysis of
primary sources. Acceptable secondary sources are those written by established
academics.
o Example: An academic article or book on the Hebrew Bible (i.e., not somebody’s
personal webpage, a magazine article, or general literature).
o Textbooks do not count as required secondary sources (feel free to use them and do cite
them).
o Only one encyclopedia entry may count toward this total.
2. Format
Your paper must follow a consistent format and be free of grammatical and spelling errors. Cite
all works used and include a bibliography. Follow formatting guidelines for previous papers –
some of these elements are repeated below.

Expectations and Strategies for Writing a Good Paper
On Using Primary Texts: The paper should reflect your analysis of the primary sources and
therefore should not consist of an extended summary of the primary texts. Assume that the reader
is familiar with all the material. Refer to the material when it is directly relevant to your
argument – i.e., don’t summarize an entire passage from the Hebrew Bible. When possible,
provide only the book, chapter, and verse number. Only cite the passage when you feel it is
absolutely necessary to the argument you are making.
On Using Secondary Sources: You are being asked to take into account the most recent
scholarly secondary literature and its role in your own argument. When using such sources, DO
NOT QUOTE THEM VERBATIM. Briefly summarize the relevant portions and provide a
footnote to the source. Use the secondary literature to bolster your arguments or to identify
alternative viewpoints. Identify your own argument within the landscape of scholarly
approaches on the topic.

The Internet is NOT an acceptable forum for finding secondary sources. The one exception is
academic journals that are available as “e-journals.” In other words, if the article does not also
appear in print in a standard academic journal, do not use it (e-journals, most of which require
subscriptions, can be accessed through the library webpage). Some academic journals only
appear online. Please consult with your Teaching Assistant before using such resources or if you
have any questions about acceptable items.
Citing Your Sources: Every creative idea that does not represent your own independent analysis
must be properly cited. This paper will expect you to draw upon other people’s insights. You will
need to cite any information you acquire that is not your own original thought. Every creative
idea that does not represent your own independent analysis must be properly footnoted. If the
information is common knowledge, you need not cite a source. If you refer to a creative idea that
is not your own, you must cite where you found this idea.
Structuring a Persuasive Argument
You should use this as a checklist before handing in your paper
1. Each paper should have an argument or thesis. This should be outlined in the introductory
paragraph.
1. Each ensuing paragraph should have an individual point that substantiates the general
point of the paper.
2. Be sure to include a brief conclusion that summarizes your arguments.
3. Each paragraph should contain some element of proof – evidence that serves to support
the general claim. Acceptable evidence for this paper should be a direct quotation or
discussion of a primary source together with analysis of why this reference bolsters your
argument. Acceptable evidence does not include unsupported general statements (i.e.,
“Throughout history, religions…”) or appeal to logic or “human nature.”
4. Avoid statements with “gives the impression” or “it is as if…” Describe what a passage is
actually relating. In other words, when you use passages from the Hebrew Bible, do not
say anything that is not derived from the primary sources. Do not make statements that
you cannot support by a specific use of language that actually occurred in the texts or
data from archaeological evidnece.
5. Cite all of your sources for your statements explicitly in parenthetical notes. Cite verses
in the Hebrew Bible according to book, chapter, and verse, such as Genesis 39:4 or Gen
39:4 (not Genesis chapter 39 verse 4).
