What Are the Odds We Are Living in a Computer Simulation Discussion Paper Hand in a properly formatted one-page typed paper, responding in some way to one or more of the above three essays in my e-book.(“Flaws of Gravity” by Christopher Hitchens,”The Art of Decision Making” and “What Are the Odds We Are Living in a Computer Simulation?” by Joshua Rothman) Do NOT summarize the reading. Write this paper completely in your own words. Do NOT quote anyone. Proofread your work carefully. Also, read “Speak Memory” by Oliver Sacks, and turn in an HR. Here are the formatting instructions:
All
papers must be typed, double-spaced, and printed out in legible black ink on good quality
plain white paper. Single-spaced papers will not be accepted because they are difficult to
read critically. Do not triple-space to “stretch” the paper.
Do not use large, bold, or fancy fonts, even for your title. Always use the Times New Roman
12-point typeface, which you are looking at now, because it is easy to read.
Set the margins to one inch at the top, bottom, left, and right.
All multi-page papers must be stapled in the upper left-hand corner (please, no folders or
binders).
O
The most common formatting errors are
1. incorrect margin size (see above for how to set the margins),
2. too much space at the bottom of the pages, and
3. too much space following paragraphs (after pressing the ENTER key).
To avoid the second problem, “select” the entire paper, go to your word processor’s paragraph
formatting window, and uncheck the box next to “Widow/Orphan control.” To avoid the third
problem, “select” the entire paper, and make sure the boxes next to “Spacing Before and After”
both read 0 pt. The default is often 8 pt., and the 8 pt. setting automatically creates extra space
that is not needed.
A properly formatted sample first page of a typed paper can be seen on the next page. Carefully
compare your papers to this sample to make certain they are formatted properly. Notice that the
sample page contains 23 lines. If your pages do too, that is a fair indication that you have done
the job right.
Your HRs must be summaries of the assigned essays; they must provide me with evidence
that you have fully done the reading. (This means no responses, reactions, or opinions—those I
want you to express in our class discussions.) The HRs must be written completely in your own
words. Do not quote anyone. If an HR does not convince me that you have read the entire essay,
you will lose points. If the HR is about the wrong essay or otherwise unacceptable, you will lose
points. Of course, the points that you accumulate or fail to accumulate will be factored in
when I determine your final grade for the course.
Your HRs should be written in good complete sentences. Don’t just jot down notes. Use the
HRs as an opportunity to practice your writing skills: grammar, punctuation, and sentence
structure.
