Paper 3: Much Ado Design Concept (150 points)
For this assignment you will need to read the script of Much Ado About Nothing by William
Shakespeare. It can be accessed for free online: Much Ado About Nothing

using more modern language, try First Reads OSFA

Compose your paper in a word processing program, then go to “Submit Assignment” and upload

Reminder, run a spelling and grammar check before you submit. And don’t forget, referencing a play
is a proper title and needs to either italicized or underlined, not in quotation marks.
Much Ado Design Concept description:
After reading Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, devise a concept for a production of Much
Ado About Nothing that you would like to see.
The idea is as if you were directing/designing a production of this play, at a local theatre perhaps, and
want to bring in your own unique way of communicating the work through interpretation of time and
place. So the script/words would stay exactly the same, but the setting, including place, costumes,
etc. would be dictated by your design concept.
For instance, one of my favorite directing experiences was basing A Midsummer Night’s Dream as a
1970’s glam rock concert. The set was essentially a concert stage and all of the characters had their
costuming based on the look of iconic musicians and bands of that era–for example Titania was
Ziggy Stardust and Oberon was Alice Cooper. Those choices were all based on how their characters

were reflected the music of these artists. All of the interlude and support music reflected the era and
situations in the script as well. Lots of fun. Again, lines exactly as written, but the
theme/plot/message of the play was communicated using this time and place.
So Much Ado About Nothing is written as taking place in fictitious Italy in the 1590’s, but you might
choose to update it and do it in modern times; Washington D.C., or New York-Wall Street for instance,
or at a high school, or perhaps set it in Chicago in the 1940’s, etc, etc. Maybe there is a place and/or
time in history (or present) that you are particularly interested in, and you can see a similarity to this
story and characters, and see this story taking place there. Keep in mind this is a comedy set after a
battle with a tenuous conclusion with many universal themes–love, betrayal, deception, battle of the
sexes, just to name a few.
Paper 3 Details/Essay Prompts:

1. Choose a time and place for the production. (Not the theatre it is playing at, but the setting and
action of the play.) Be specific. 18th century France is not specific enough. July 14th 1784, the
streets of Paris, France is. You may choose any location or time between 1598 when the play was
first performed and today–not the future please. Describe why you have chosen this, including
what is significant about this choice in relationship to the play. Relate specific instances from the
script to support your choice.
2. Brief (one or two short paragraphs) of the themes and ideas in the play that you want to
emphasize, including one or more “active verbs” that will drive your concept. (for instance:
“deceive”, “manipulate”, “pursue”). Again, relate specific instances from the script to support your
choice.
3. Choose two or more design elements on which to focus: scenery, lighting, costumes, props,
hair/makeup.
–Assemble the following: historical research for your design element(s) in the chosen time period:
images, either found or created that show your vision of the design element and statement of how
the choices you are making in your area support the overall concept by mentioning script
instances or character differences, etc.
–Images may be from any sources EXCEPT actual designs from other productions of Much Ado

About Nothing. You may create original drawings, sketches or artwork of any kind and submit
photos of it.
–Each image submitted must be accompanied by a source citation.
Materials should be in a word format with inserted images or power point presentation and
then upload your file as a .doc, .docx, or .pdf..
This paper is worth 150 points.
There is no specified word count minimum for this paper, as some of it may be communicated
in photos or drawings. So just cover your ideas as thoroughly as you can.
Late work will receive partial credit.
