1- (Joshanloo) identifies six ways in which Eastern philosophies differ from Western philosophies when it comes to understanding “happiness.” Which three of these do you think are most significant, and why? Do you see any overlap between Eastern and Western philosophical understandings of happiness, and if so, where? Which of these philosophies is most similar to your own understanding of happiness, and in what ways is it similar?

2- (McMahon) How have cultural understandings of “happiness” changed over time, according to Darrin McMahon? What factors prompted these changes in how society members thought about “happiness”? Which of these did you find most interesting, and why?

3- (The Paradox of Generosity) Everyone should answer the first part of this question (part A) AND either part B OR part C.

A. What does it mean to “live generously,” and how does a “generous” lifestyle correlate to happiness (individually and collectively, as a society)? In what ways might some people see this correlation as paradoxical?

B. How “generous” would you say your own lifestyle is–in what specific ways do you, or have you, practiced generosity? What factors (including your values, experiences, influences, etc.) have contributed to this? Did your acts of generosity increase your own happiness, and how?

C. Based on your own observations and experiences, does American society encourage or discourage generous living? In what ways does it express this encouragement/discouragement? How has this affected American society, in your opinion? What would need to happen in order for this attitude to change?

Which way do you see the story, and why? What similarities did you observe between the actions and thoughts of the characters in this story and the type of “generous” behavior described in “The Paradox of Generosity”?
