Art Questions
1. Video for a-ha’s “Take on Me,” 1985. Animation by Michael Patterson and Candace Reckinger. Directed by Steve Barron. Courtesy of Rhino Entertainment Company.
When MTV first went on the air on August 1, 1981, no one could have predicted the impact it would have on American and, eventually, world culture. From the start, it championed innovation in the visual and filmic arts. Do you think that at least some music videos, like a-ha’s “Take on Me,” qualify as art? Can you think of other, equally interesting music videos? What about them raisesthem to the level of art?
Please make sure that your response is a minimum of 175 words. Your initial response is due Friday, at midnight. Be sure to reply to one other student by Sunday, at midnight.
2. Vincent van Gogh’s Japonaiserie: The Courtesan (after Kesai Eisen) openly admits that it is copied from the work of another artist. In other words, Van Gogh appropriated the work of others to create this painting. How does this affect the work’s value in your eyes? Does it raise questions of plagiarism? Are there comparable instances of appropriation in contemporary culture, such as the practice of sampling in hip hop music?
Please make sure that your response is a minimum of 175 words. Your initial response is due Friday, at midnight. Be sure to reply to one other student by Sunday, at midnight.
3. Since the moment it happened in 1971, Chris Burden’s Shoot has been variously ridiculed as an act of masochism and praised as art of great daring and even sophistication. Can you make a case for both points of view? How does the role of gun violence in American history affect your thinking? (Link to video of Burden’s Shoot: https://youtu.be/BncjvhWecTw)
Please make sure that your response is a minimum of 175 words. Your initial response is due Friday at midnight. Be sure to reply to one other student by Sunday, at midnight.
4. Peter Voulkos, The Eagle has Landed, 1999. Wood-fired stoneware stack, height 34-1/2 in. , diameter 23 in. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
In woodfiring ceramics, artists must give up control of their creations and resign themselves to the unpredictable and even accidental effects of submitting them to intensely high heat over the course of seven days. Why do you think Peter Voulkos embraces such chance operations? Does the lack of control make him less–or more– of an artist? How might the process be seen as challenging the distinctions between art and life?
Please make sure that your response is a minimum of 175 words. Your initial response is due Friday, at midnight. Be sure to reply to one other student by Sunday, at midnight.
