B. Identity and Development Paper

The second assignment requires students to write a ten (10) page paper thoroughly describing and analyzing one of your social identities, and how it relates to one of the systems of privilege and oppression discussed in class and the readings. Please see pages 18, 20 and 21 of the course syllabus for detailed guidelines to follow in completing this assignment.

SOCIAL IDENTITY AND DEVELOPMENT PAPER GUIDELINES

Please relax, take a deep breath and using a narrate form write this paper to describe the influence that systems of privilege and oppression may have or may not have had on one of your social identities and development. In particular, please demonstrate your understanding (three to four paragraphs) and ability to apply a theoretical models (Chickering, Marcia, Cross, Helm’s, Cass, Erikson, Levinson, Kohlberg, Gilligan, etc.) to one of your social identities and development in contemporary society. To organize your thoughts please answer the questions below to demonstrate your understanding and application of one of the above identity models to your current stage of development. The paper is limited to a total of ten pages and must include citations and a minimum of ten references.

1. Please provide an overview (three to four paragraphs) of the identity model that you have selected to describe your development.

2. Where were you were born and raised and did this environment influence your identity and development? How old are you now? Give examples.

3. What is your sibling position in your family of origin and how did it influence the development of your identity? Give examples.

4. What was the socioeconomic status of your family of origin when you were born? What is your socioeconomic status it now? How did your socioeconomic status (then and now) influence your identity and development?

5. What age did you recognize one of your social identities (e.g., gender, ethnicity, race, colorism, class, religious and sexual orientation)? What happened? Give examples.

6. What are some of the privileges associated with one of your social identities (e.g., gender, race, ethnicity, class, religious and sexual orientation) within contemporary society?

7. What are some of the disadvantages associated with one of your social identities (e.g., gender, ethnicity, race, colorism, class, religious and sexual orientation) within contemporary American society? Give examples.

8. How was systems of privilege and oppression (e.g., racism, colorism, sexism, homosexuality, classism, language, religious orientation, etc.) addressed in your family? Give examples.

9. What was the influence of one of the systems of privilege and oppression (e.g., racism, colorism, sexism, homosexuality, classism, language, religious orientation, etc.) on your identity and development? Give examples.

10. How does your current stage of your identity and development influence your prejudices and behavior toward members of your same group? Give examples.

11. How does your current stage of one of your social identities influence your prejudices and behavior toward members of different groups? Give examples.

12. How did or did not your experience with members of other diverse groups affect your

identity and development? Give example.

13. What strategies or techniques do you use to cope with one of the systems of privileges and oppression? Are they effective? Are they healthy? Give examples.

14. How will your increased awareness of one of your social identities and development assist you in becoming a culturally competent and sensitive social work practitioner? Give examples.

15. What are some of the challenges you must overcome to support and promote your personal and professional identity and development? Give examples.
