WPI What Is Systems Engineering? Presentation Help For this assignment, each team must develop a presentation (to include a video and PowerPoint file) designed for middle school students (6th through 8th grade, 11 to 13 years old). The main objective of the presentation is to explain systems engineering in a manner that is both understandable and engaging. Explain the main concepts, practices, skills, tasks, importance, etc. associated with systems engineering. Examples would likely be helpful. The video must be between 25-30 minutes in length, so be sure to only include the most relevant information.Make sure to add a title page with the team members, assignment title, date, and include your list of references on the final slide. Each team member must present a portion of the presentation. In the Notes section of each slide, please list who presented the slide. The team lead for this assignment should post the final PowerPoint file and video to the Assignment area by the due date.NOTE: You may use any method to record your presentation video. One method that you may want to consider is creating an .mp4 file using PowerPoint. Each team member can record his/her slide(s) in the PowerPoint file. The file can then be exported as a video. This may be a good methodology for team members who must work together virtually (a good skill to have in your careers). WHAT IS SYSTEMS ENGINEERING?

What is Systems Engineering?
Introduction
System engineering refers to a field of study concerned with the design and management
of complex systems (Douglass, 2016). It is an interdisciplinary field, a combination of various
engineering and engineering management skills. The key roles of systems engineering include
the design and implementation of systems, logistics, improving the reliability of systems,
coordination of various engineering teams, systems testing, and evaluation of system
performance (Douglass, 2016). It overlaps to technical and human-centered disciplines such as
software engineering, control engineering, project management systems among others. This
paper will evaluate implications on system engineering findings, new insights, and interesting
observations in system engineering.
The concept of system engineering
The basic concept of systems engineering was first developed by Bell Telephone
Laboratories, which was committed to identification and manipulation of systems to enhance
system performance (Douglass, 2016). System engineering has been committed to formalize
performance of a system and develop new ways of improving reliability and performance of a
system. Due to the advancement in technology, system engineering has faced evolution and
improvement over time and has been applied in broader interdisciplinary modification (Sarfraz &
Ahmed, 2019). Taking, for instance, ancient engineering was committed to physical systems
such as the spacecraft and aircraft. In modern times, systems engineering is more concerned with
monitoring and controlling the physical system by application of computer software.
In the evaluation of system engineering in organizations, the focus has been directed to
meeting customer needs through operations in a functional cycle. Application of stakeholder

involvement, requirements, and system validation has helped in the attainment of system
engineering goals. According to Kumar, Rastogi & Nag (2019), system engineering can be
composed of the technical and maintenance processes to attain the projected output in a given
discipline. The technical process deals with the assessment of the available information,
evaluating effectiveness and creation of a behavior model as well as a structural model to
perform a trade-off analysis.
For systems engineering to develop, the contribution from diverse technical disciplines is
required. A unified team effort is gained in a system by viewing the development efforts used
and molding them to achieve the technical structure of the system thus enhancing performance,
system monitoring, and risk management (Douglass, 2016). Some acquisitions have combined
holistic integrative disciplines together with a tradeoff in cost, schedule, and performance within
acceptable risk margins of the item. The desired concepts are replicated through education
programs covering system engineering in different fields to gain the applicable knowledge.
Implications in system engineering
Although system engineering has been viewed to enhance efficiency and improve
performance, implications have also been realized in meeting the expected requirements of
operations. The major implications in system engineering is education, system engineering
topics, and the system engineering process (Johannsen, 2014). Education through regular courses
offered in system engineering is the key extension incentives that has been used in building the
expected attitude and behaviors of the engineering process in the real world. However,
undergraduate university programs in system engineering are rare except in graduate levels that
have a foundation on the basic requirements of system engineering.
ROLE OF SYSTEM ENGINEERING
4
System engineering describes tools of strategy, procedures, and techniques used in
attaining project objectives in systems engineering. Through history, there has been existing
variation in data management, graphical designs, simulation, and reasoning in systems applied.
Similarly, different definitions such as ANSI/EIA-632-1999 and DAU systems have been
difficult to understand among some scholars (Douglass, 2016). System engineering process
contains a collection of creativity, manual and technical activities to define product and
performance of a system. The design and development of the system into four stages have
different definitions that can easily be confusing (Bodeau & Graubart, 2019). Among the
definitions include the task or informative definition, conceptual stage or cardinal definition,
design stage or formative definition as well as the implementation stage. Tools are required to be
applied in the stages to enhance efficiency and performance of a system.

New insight lesson
The understanding of system engineering is through method application, frequent
practice and improving rules that exist in different systems. An overview of modern organization
management, information and technology-based companies such as software development
organizations, electronic companies, and communication organizations have applied wide use of
system engineering as part of their firm activities. Analysis of company performance has
revealed that system engineering has contributed to about 20% of the production effort applied in
production companies (Douglass, 2016). Cost reduction and efficient management have been the
key reasons for the incorporation of system engineering in companies.
Another insight is on the use of modeling and simulation to validate theories of system
engineering. Models are used in the detection of initial failures from a designed safety system
engineering. Techniques such as Jay Wright Forrester’s system dynamics and the Unified
Modeling Language (UML) have been developed to support process engineering and avoid
future inconveniences that may be faced.
Interesting observations
Remarkable observations that have been realized in system engineering include the
System Modeling Language (SysML) and the Lifecycle Modeling Language (LML). The first
one describes a language for system engineering process that supports specifications, analysis
and verification of wide range complex systems, while the second one is a standard language that
supports the entire lifecycle based on the concept, utilization, support, and the retirement stages.
ROLE OF SYSTEM ENGINEERING
6
Another interesting field is the Cognitive System Engineering (CSE), which is concerned with
the description and analysis of human-machine systems.
Conclusion
System engineering describes interdisciplinary engineering that is committed to
enhancing efficiency, minimize risks, and improve reliability of systems. Different areas have
applied the use of system engineering and history can help understand the shift from physical
systems engineering to software-oriented systems engineering. The increasing dependency of
companies on system engineering is showing the developing need to have systems engineering.
