Q: What is plagiarism? Define it. List and provide an
explanation or example of 3 ways that students can avoid
plagiarism. As a teacher, describe a scenario where you can aid
students in preventing plagiarism.
Response 1 (to question) (earns full credit).
Plagiarism is defined as, “…intentionally or carelessly
presenting the work of another as one’s own” in the USF
Graduate Catalog—2011/12. This includes submitting an
assignment under your own name when someone else created it.
Failing to acknowledge a contributor is also plagiarism.
Maintaining academic integrity is paramount in higher
education. One way that a student can avoid plagiarism is by
citing direct quotes in proper format, such as APA. Instead of
citing a secondary source, a student should research back to the
original source to make certain they have interpreted the original
author’s ideas correctly and given them credit. Finally,
paraphrasing, while still providing attribution, is a good way to
