For this part of this Discussion Assignment, you will be responding to 6 questions from the PowerPoint Lecture below. Please watch my 12-minute lecture on Poetry and the next set of poems for the Poetry Unit and then complete the six activities in the PowerPoint simply by clicking the “reply” button in this post. Also, as mentioned in the lecture, I have posted this PowerPoint in the modules page so that you can take advantage of the YouTube links I have provided with readings for some of the poems. As a reminder, below are the 6 activities you must complete in order to get full credit for this assignment: Activity #10 – Choose one of the 3 poems (“Not Waving But Drowning” by Stevie Smith, “Embrace” by Billy Collins, “Driving to Town Late to Mail a Letter” by Robert Bly) and identify the use of imagery in the poem. How does the imagery better help you understand the poem? Activity #11 –Turn to pg 452 (467), and read “Metaphors” by Sylvia Plath. What is each line a metaphor for? (hint: all lines refer to one central fact). Activity #12 – Identify what is being personified in James Stephens’ “The Wind” and how? Activity #13 – Identify 2 analogies in “Sonnet 130.” Then find the matching analogies in “Dim Lady.” Why are these strong comparisons and what do they show about the poems’ overall meaning? Activity #14 – Choose one of these three poems (“Faithless Nelly Gray” by Thomas Hood, “You fit into me” by Margaret Atwood, “Epitaph” by Timothy Steele), and identify the use of pun in the poem. How does the author use a “play on words” in his/her poem? Activity #15 – Which of the verses (posted on the final slide of this PowerPoint lecture) from “To His Coy Mistress” is an understatement, and which is an overstatement? How do you know?
