Choose one of the following prompts, or something closely related, and write a narrative essay on the topic (800 words minimum). In a narrative essay (also called a remembering essay) you should use a story or memory or even an observation to convey your moment of discovery.

All essays must include a dominant impression and specific, descriptive details in the body of the essay. The best essays will show the event, person, lesson, etc…, instead of just tell about it. Bring your reader to a specific moment in time by using dialogue, descriptive details, and vivid imagery. Reflect on the significance of your topic by describing how you have changed or how the topic has affected you.

Choose one of the following:

• Topic: Write about an event that changed you in a significant way.

Content and Organization

?The title of your essay needs to reflect the main point of your paper. Avoid titles like

“Paper #1” or “Remembering Essay.”

?Your introduction should grab your reader’s attention. Avoid general introductions

that don’t say anything. The best introductions will plunge the reader right into themiddle of the conflict.

?The second paragraph (or section) of your paper will probably need to provide

background details and any relevant facts about the situation.

?The body of your paper needs to provide ample descriptive details and enough

narration to effectively convey your moment of discovery. The body of the paper is

where you’ll tell the central story.

?Your conclusion should be reflective in nature. What did you learn? How did the

event (or story, or person) affect you? How have you changed because of what

happened? What was your discovery?

Audience: Your audience for this paper is a familiar audience, yet they expect a well-written essay that doesn’t leave them with any questions.

Purpose: Your purpose for this paper is two-fold: First, you are writing this paper for yourself so that you can explore something that is significant to you. Second, you are writing this paper for an audience who wants to relate to you and your experiences.
