Drug and Alcohol Addiction

Purpose: This assignment is intended to support student development of oral communication skills and digital literacy skills through their preparation and delivery of oral presentation.

The scenario: You are one of several managers of a financial intermediary being present at a fundraising event. The financial intermediary is the host and has been selected by a government body (in Australia or any other country) to help raise private capital through an issue of social impact bonds (SIB). The government body plans to combine the money raised with its budget to support the expansion of a proven intervention program that is delivered by a not-for-profit social service provider to address a pressing social problem.

To draw interest to this investment opportunity and secure private funding for the project, the financial intermediary has invited all clients with an interest in impact investing, philanthropic foundations, and managers of socially responsible funds to attend the event and learn about the cause.

Your role: Your job is to deliver a presentation at the event to the clients, philanthropic foundations and fund managers to

1. Raise awareness of the pressing social problem;

2. Convey a credible picture of the intervention program.

The objective is to convince the audience that the social service provider responsible for the development and delivery of the intervention program is worthy of their funding.

The social problem: The lecturer will assign you to one of the following social problems in Week 1: domestic violence, drug and alcohol addiction, homelessness, indigenous disadvantage, mental health, migrant unemployment, NEET, youth homelessness, youth recidivism or youth unemployment.

Requirements: There are three sequential tasks to attempt.

1. Presentation Topic Questionnaire – We use this task to facilitate early preparation. Knowing the social problem and having a good understanding of the intervention program early will give you time to develop well-thought content for the presentation.

To complete this task, you must fill in the questionnaire via Moodle no later than 9 am Thursday, Teaching Week 2. Though this task does not carry any marks, you will receive formative feedback upon submission.

We have identified one or two intervention programs per social problem. The entire list of social problems and corresponding intervention programs can be found in Appendix 1. Though you do not have a choice on the social problem, you may select one corresponding intervention program from Appendix 1 OR elsewhere on you own for the purpose of presentation.

Important: EXPLORE AND SELECT ONE INTERVENTION PROGRAM BEFORE attempting the questionnaire, the questions of which are shown in Appendix 2.

2. Video presentation – Practice is the key to build confidence in public speaking. To ease students into their final presentation, we ask you to produce a video presentation. You will receive formative feedback to take on board before the final presentation.

To complete this task, which is worth 5% of overall course marks, you must submit a video (MP4 format is recommended) AND supporting slides (PowerPoint is recommended) via Moodle no later than 9 am Thursday, Teaching Week 6.

The presentation is about raising awareness of the social problem only. The video must not exceed 1 minute and 45 seconds. The time allowed is inclusive of introduction about yourself (to the imaginary audience). DO NOT spend time on the intervention program.

3. Final presentation: This task is about raising awareness of the social problem (i.e., the same topic as the video presentation) and conveying a credible picture of the intervention program. To complete this task, which is worth 10% of overall course marks, you must i. submit supporting slides (PowerPoint is recommended) via Moodle no later than 9 am Monday, Teaching Week 9, AND ii. deliver the presentation in person during class in Teaching Week 9 or Week 10. You have no more than 3 minutes and 15 seconds to deliver the presentation. The time allowed is inclusive of introduction about yourself to the audience. You will receive summative feedback after the presentation. The schedule for final presentation will be posted on Moodle in due course for students to find out their presentation time and week.

The presentation is about raising awareness of the social problem only.
