How to write the response paper
Intro
- First sentence is like a summary
- Title (in quotations), author’s name, the year in brackets, transition verb, the main idea
- EX: In the article “—title——-“, Michael DiPetta (2020) argues that___main idea____
- 4-5 sentences that summarize the article. Only include main ideas and the author’s main arguments
Body
- Analysis (1 paragraph at least)
- HOW the article was written
- Evaluate – tone, word choice, organization, sources, register (formal/informal) academic or conversational tone, biased (only discusses one point of view and not the opposite view)
- Sources – is the source reliable? Where was it from? What year was it?
- 1998 survey on home computers – would that be a useful source? No! it is too old, maybe it is only of a small group of people, maybe it was from a magazine that is not reputable
- Examine and evaluate!!
- Was the source or tone (whatever you are analyzing) effective in persuading the reader???????
- EX: In the article, Michael DiPetta (2020) uses a conversational tone and slang when he writes, “what’s up with that!?” (para. 1) he is using it to try and connect with a larger audience of younger readers. However, this is ineffective if he wants his audience to take the arguments more seriously. The reader is less likely to agree because this subject should have a more academic tone. The reader is not persuaded by this….
- Tone – angry, sympathetic (quote the word choice to prove this)
- Response (1 paragraph at least)
- WHAT the article said
- Agree or disagree with a point the author stated
- Agree or disagree with the overall thesis of the original article
- Quote from the article – and give the proper context to the quotation
- Then respond by agreeing or disagreeing and stating why
- EX: DiPetta (2020) states that “Junk food should be banned from elementary schools because it is too high in sugar” (p. 5). I agree with this statement because….. I disagree because ….. This Is beneficial because…. I think it also benefits because of this…..
- Agree or disagree and say why, add to the point, but always quote what the point is you are agreeing/disagreeing with
- Introduce the point
- State your position (agree or disagree)
- Explain your position
- Give further advice on the issue (opinion)
Conclusion
- Restate the main idea of the article
- Restate your analysis point
- Restate your response point
- Final thought on how this impacts society or future studies…
