We have read a number of poems and short stories about men and women and the expectations that society places on them. Write an essay about two (or more) characters that we have read about in the play, poems, or short stories in Reading on the River. Demonstrate what society’s expectations, or the perceived expectations, are for the characters you choose, and show how and why those expectations have influenced the characters’ behavior or courses of action. Develop a strong thesis with three or four points of support augmented with logic, quotes, examples, analogies, and opinions. The essay should be 750 -1000 words (roughly 3-4 pages) and be double-spaced using 12 point font. Develop a title for your essay. The essay should be thesis driven, the thesis clearly stated, and should have good support for the thesis. You must use at least one primary source and one secondary source for your essay. Your essay must contain at least two properly cited quotes and must have a Works Cited page using proper MLA format. Assessment will be based upon the strength of your thesis, relevant support, continuity, syntax, and diction.
