Original Research Articles Description:

1. Original Research Articles are long-form submissions to the journal—including, but not limited to, ones that deal primarily with normative and conceptual issues in international theory. Original research articles should not exceed 12,000 words—including all tables, figures, footnotes, and bibliography, but excluding abstract and maximum 10 pages of appendices. These submissions address important global phenomena relevant to a general international-studies audience. They should have a well-developed, original, theoretical argument that is supported, as appropriate, by a rigorous substantive analysis consistent with the manuscript’s methodological approach. As with all contributions, they should reflect original work.
2. longer research articles (14,000 words, maximum) present new theoretical arguments and/or empirical evidence that constitute a substantial advance of knowledge.

Review Essays Description:

1. review essays survey new developments in a particular area of study. Review essays might be based on books but could also draw on scholarship that has been published in articles, including in areas not traditionally covered by IO but that are nonetheless important and relevant for an IO audience. Prospective authors can either submit the entire manuscript for review or they can submit a ten-page, double-spaced proposal detailing the body of research to be covered and the main themes to be explored. Promising proposals will be sent to two referees. On the basis of their reviews, which will be sent anonymously to the author, the editors will write a decision letter.
2. Analytical Essays integrate scholarship, clarify debates, provide new perspectives on research, identify new directions for the field, and present insights into scholarship in various parts of the world.
