Week 3 Discussion: Building capacity for success in developing care and socio-emotional learning. To maximize student performance, doctoral programs must investigate what can be done to strengthen relationship-building in caring and enhancing students’ relationships.
I did find that the argument is supportive, effective in academic and social-emotional learning that is focused on good relationships to include environments. However, I feel as though there are challenges that arise as well with attempting to develop care and socio-emotional learning in the first year. As the significance of care is increased and trivialized mostly in the higher levels of education, such as doctoral programs, it is suggested to examine ways in which enhancement of relationship-building can successful in order to increase student success and quality of life. Self-awareness helps with maintaining motivation and academic discipline. With that comes being able to effectively manage time, accomplish any task, and meet deadlines/responsibilities for the program and set goals. According to Rogers Shaw & Carr, Shellman Participants attributed their academic discipline and ability to handle stress to perseverance, drive, and work ethic. These doctoral students were very conscious of the decisions they made and the reasons behind these decisions. In their discussion of the relationships that supported them throughout their study, they identified emotions triggered by these relationships, and they discussed how those who cared for them helped them to recognize their strengths and gain more self-confidence.
