Emerson College the Foreign Student Novel Discussion Your one paper for this course will be on book you’ve read for your research project. This assignment is meant to prepare you for the writing process.

The Foreign Student by Susan Choi

First, re-read the assignment parameters. Then, lay out for me your plan for your paper. Your plan should include the following:

1. Book title

2. Topic/focus/driving questions of the paper and why you’ve chosen this route

3. Potential quotes you might include in your paper (4-5) and how you think they connect to your topic/focus/questions

4. 3, potential secondary sources you might incorporate into your paper and how you could use them. Incorporation of outside sources can take many forms. You might use a scholar’s definition that’s critical for your paper’s success. You might use a scholar’s argument as the foundation, and then explain how you’ll be building on it. You might present a constellation of arguments to characterize the conversation(s) scholars are having about your chosen work, and then deviate form them, exploring something they’ve yet to address. There’s no one way to incorporate outside sources, but you need to have an idea of how they can help you before you begin writing.
