Inver Hills Community College Environmental Impact of Cars Emission Research Research Assignment You will evaluate an environmental/ecological topic of your choice.. You will then write a paper that uses scientific evidence to support your stance (conclusions). Step 1: Choosing a Topic You will identify a topic related to Environmental Science. Good places to find current environmental issues include: the New York Times science section, sciencedaily.com, and weekly magazines such as Time and Newsweek. Pick a topic that is interesting to you! Once you choose your topic, you are to write a brief summary stating your topic, and why you chose it. Be sure that the topic you pick has sufficient information available, but do not ask too broad a question. Broad questions: What is global warming? What is a hybrid car? Good alternatives: What are the effects of global warming on arctic caribou? What are the environmental benefits of hybrid over gasoline cars with respect to emissions? Step 2: Outline Briefly, you will be breaking down your topic into subtopics. This is really just an outline of the topic. Your completed assignment should have the following components: 1. Make a list of 3-4 major subtopics. Subtopics can also be further subdivided if necessary. 2. Under each subtopic or heading, write a description. This should be a paragraph describing each subtopic in more detail based on your research. The information you provide in your outline should be based on some exploration of your topic. Your outline grade will be based on the detailed information you provide. The more you research your topic, the more detail you can provide. Step 3: Annotated Bibliography Finish finding articles and websites that provide background information and results (data, such as tables and graphs) for your final paper. You must prepare an annotated bibliography related to the topic. The number and diversity of your references will be important, including resources from the library, such as textbooks or journals, from Internet sources or other literary sources such as pamphlets. You must have at least 10 references, with at least 5 from scholarly sources. You will receive points based on the number, quality and variety of references. Be careful when using websites for information. References must be properly cited according to the type of reference (e.g. book, journal article, etc…) The author, name of the article, name of journal or book, editor or publisher, and date must be included in each citation. If an internet source is used, include the URL address in addition to this information. You may use CBE, MLA or APA format. Each reference must be followed with a brief paragraph, describing the relevance and quality of the reference to your final paper. In other words, summarize and evaluate the reference. Step 4: Paper Your final paper is expected to consist of 5-8 written pages (not including any illustrations). You should include illustrations, as they can be very useful in presenting your ideas and supporting your statements. Don’t forget to include in-text citations and your final bibliography!
