Imagine that you have just been elected to the 117th Congress. As you take your seat in Washington, D.C., you must consider how you will evaluate public opinion as you represent your constituents. Political parties serve a valuable role connecting citizens with their government. It is unlikely that we can eliminate political parties in the United States, but parties have adapted to changes in electoral rules. James Madison identified the importance of factions in Federalist #10 and would his conception of our government be reinvigorated if the United States adopted a system of proportional representation that made it easier for third parties to gain seats in government or are we better off maintaining our first-past-the-post system organized around two dominant parties? Explain (do not argue that if the current situation is not broken, there is no need to fix it).
